How will the candidates address the rising crime and drug issues?
Hillary Clinton |
Donald Trump |
Hillary Clinton believes that contributing $1 billion towards training programs for police departments and supporting laws for ending racial discrimination will improve and reform the criminal justice system. She wishes to create guidelines that highlight when force by police officers should and should not use force. Some of her solutions include requiring every police department to access body cameras and to also change the minimum sentencing when it comes to drug offenders. Hillary has expressed that she wants to stop putting those who use marijuana in prison and to allow the usage of marijuana for medical purpose

Donald Trump beliefs are focused more towards the system. He believes that judges should be held accountable more often, as many judges may release criminals into society by being “too forgiving.” He believes that the only way to ensure this doesn't happen is to elect judges as he doesn't believe in lessening sentences for offenders. Trump is a supporter of the death sentence and sees prison as the solution to the offenses criminals commit. Although his beliefs on punishment are different, Trump is in agreement with Hillary on the legalization of marijuana. He agrees that the approach should be looked over with extreme caution, and it shouldn't be a rushed decision. Another issue in which Hillary and Trump agree on is changing minimum sentences. However, although he wants to reform, it is in a complete opposite way as he feels that the sentences should be increased for drug related crimes. Trumps ultimate goal is security for the country. Trump believes that we need vigilance and we need to get to the bottom of our ongoing problem which is “police being the most mistreated people in the country.” His beliefs that Police need the power to be returned to start this country on the right track is what stands out. Trump says that he understands the ongoing problem between African Americans and the police, but as he sees it, the power is in the police because there needs to be law in the country.

Jill Stein |
Gary Johnson |
Jill Stein has interesting beliefs on these topics. She supports the legalization of both recreational and medical marihuana. Unlike the other candidates, she is more focused on the person and their health rather than the criminal offenses and sentences that come with it. Stein believes that jail time for “crimes” involving drug abuse is unnecessary. She is not in agreement with the death penalty and agrees strongly that it doesn't help in any way. Another issue that Stein addresses is that she believes that records for drug abuse should not be an issue and should not burden an individual. Stein has a similar belief on Black Lives Matter as she supports and believes in this. She wants to figure out ways to end racism between people in our country. Stein is very sure to include her efforts into restoring mother nature and try to provide very family with a living-wage job. In her efforts to end poverty, she supports free universal childcare and wants to ensure every person with economic human rights. In her education efforts, she believes that there should be tuition free public education from pre-k through university. Her beliefs are based mostly on help for the people and her main focus is to try and find ways to maintain laws and rules, but take into account what the people want and need.

Gary Johnson believes that prison is not the correct solution for drug abuse. He is extremely open about his views and is pro legalizing marijuana for medical and other uses. Johnson believes that rehabilitation is the best solution to drug use and abuse. Concerning minimum sentences for offenses, he believes that these sentences for drug offenses are not favorable. He has expressed that jails are extremely crowded and overpopulated as it is, and adding so many minimum sentences is not the best solution. He believes that thousands of lives and billion of dollars can be save dmy adjusting how we handle drug abuse. Johnson believes that the minorities are affected the most by the war on drugs. The class doesn't have the money or supplies needed to fund a pricey attorney. His beliefs that unnecessary laws have put many individuals in tough situations where they are left with criminal records or incarcerated. Johnson believes that his policies can change the criminal justice for the better as he is dedicated to develop a relationship between enforcement and the people.
